Who We Are
Core Values and Ethos
Statement of the National YMCA Movement
The ethos of the YMCA Movement in England is based on its acceptance of the Paris Basis of 1855 incorporated into the National Statement of the Aims and Purposes of the YMCA in England, adopted at the National Assembly of the English Young Men's Christian Associations in the year 2003, namely:
"The YMCA is a Christian Movement which seeks to unite those who, regarding Jesus Christ as their God and Saviour according to the Holy Scriptures, desire to be His disciples in their faith and in their life, and to associate their efforts for the extension of His Kingdom. It welcomes into its fellowship persons of all religious faiths and of none."
The core values of the National YMCA are:
- A world-wide fellowship based on the equal value of all persons
- Respect and freedom for all
- Tolerance and understanding between people of different opinions
- Active concern for the needs of the community
- United effort by Christians of different traditions
The core values of the East Herts YMCA
Throughout our work with young people, we will be:
- Effective - responding to the needs of young people
- Focussed - supporting those in need, but also open to working with all young people from all backgrounds and beliefs
- Co-ordinated - taking a holistic approach, we recognise that a young person's development encompasses body, mind and spirit
- Versatile - recognising that the different needs of young people can be met in different ways
- Positive about partnerships - committed to forging alliances with other organisations that will help us achieve our aims
- Transparent - open in the way we work with all young people and our staff, board members and volunteers
- Committed - continuing the professional and personal development of our staff, board members and volunteers
- Respectful - maintaining personal privacy and the right to confidentiality
In all our work we recognise the Christian foundations of the YMCA whilst reflecting diversity and applying equal opportunities practice in the services we offer and as an employer.
